This trek is an excellent addition to visiting the historical cities of
Uzbekistan. The mountains of Uzbekistan are beautiful, but still inferior to the beauty of the Fann Mountains. Over the five days that you may spend in Tajikistan you will see much more beauty of nature than at the same time in any of the accessible mountainous regions of Uzbekistan. At the same time, none of the cities of Tajikistan is comparable to the world-famous historical centers of Samarkand and Bukhara. If you want to see everything at once, please contact us.

The little hero who conquered the Super Giant Slalom

Amir Gusev finshed the Super Giant Slalom in 1 minute 2,39 seconds. He improved his divisioning result by 13 seconds. (Photo: Bavo Delbaere)

Bavo Delbaere, AIPS Young Reporter, Belgium

SCHLADMING/RAMSAU, March 22, 2017 – Two skis make a horizontal turn, snow shoots inall directions. Time is stopped, and the cheering crowds reach a crescendo. They just witnessed a special performance. A member of the USA skiingdelegation quickly grabs a pen and jokingly writes down ‘Amir Gusev’ on their nationalcontestant list. He just saw the Uzbek 11-year old snatch away the gold medal inthe Advanced Super Giant Slalom Final.

Amir has quickly raced his way to fame in the Special Olympic corridors.A group of volunteers pat him on the shoulder and seize the opportunity to talkto him as he passes by. “We’ve heard you’re quite a talent. When will you beracing again? We want to make sure we’re there to watch!” They seem just ascaptivated as Bryan Tweit, an Alpine Skiing Coach from team USA who was on siteduring the race. “Suddenly a very young athlete shows up on top of themountain. He starts zigzagging down better and faster than all the olderopponents. It was not just some ordinary race, it was the final of the SuperGiant Slalom advanced division. That’s quite an achievement at such a youngage, my jaws literally dropped.”

Uzbekistan team coach Dmitriy Pitirimov stays cool under all the excitement. “It’s not about pride, I don’t like that feeling. I am grateful though. Pridegives you the feeling you are already there, gratefulness keep your feet on theground. I won’t deny that he did a great job of course! I checked the clocktwice just to be sure it really happened. It was incredible! But the next racecan be something wholely different, it does not end here, I want him to continue training hard.”

The talented youth grew up in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan: acountry that has everlasting snow, mountain peaks that reach 4500 metres andplenty of untouched nature. He has trouble with reading, writing and expressinghimself. His father died when he was still very young so with only his motherlooking out for him, it has not been an easy time for the small family. Amirspends most of his time in a school for disabled children.

In 2009, coach Dmitriy started cooperating with the school. The idea wasto take the disabled kids to go rock climbing. From there on his life took aradical twist. He got involved with the children a lot, one of which he adoptedas his own daughter. Two other young rock climbers turned into very successfulsportsmen. “They are now competing in the national team of Uzbekistan. I’m nottalking about the Special Olympics, but the regular national team!” Dmitriy pointsout.

The Uzbek coach started preparing for the Winter Games in Austria duringthe fall of 2016. He has 30 years of experience in Alpine skiing and time wasripe to pass on his knowledge. A new group of youngsters from the school wereselected, they started training from scratch. The first days they were justwalking and trying to find the balance on the skis. Step by step progress wasmade and slowly but surely their talent rose to the surface.

Coach Dmitriy soon realized one of them was very gifted: Amir. “He is 11years old so he doesn’t weigh as much as his opponents who are adults, hisfeatherweight is a disadvantage in skiing but Amir overthrows that with hisbravery.” The pupil knows what it takes to perform, he uses his excellentbalance as an asset. He might have learning difficulties but when it comes topractical things he adapts very fast.

According to Dmitriy, a coach must do more than just train his athletes.“You have to be a mentor, take responsibility and guide them through life.” Heis not the kind of person who will dictate life lessons to his disciples.According to him it’s all about setting good examples. Because when you letthem experience positive moments, they will eventually come out of their shell.

“Hospitality is anchored in the Uzbek way of life. In the summer orduring vacation I invite the athletes to my home. My family gives them food, care and love.  We spend time togetherhigh in the mountains and we ski till the sun goes down. He won a gold medal but I will trulyhave succeeded when he has a good job later and can participate in society likeeverybody else.”

Classification

Note: This article describes the IFSC classification system, national systems may be different.

Impairments can be very different and so also the level of climbing. To ensure a fair competition, athletes are classified in order to compete against athletes with a similar level of impairment. In Paraclimbing, we have 10 different sport classes at the moment.

  • Blind categories (B1, B2, B3)
  • Amputees (AU1, AU2, AL1, AL2)
  • Limited reach, power or stability (RP1, RP2, RP3)

Higher numbers equal higher functionality (less impairment), lower numbers equal lower functionality (more impairment). So that means B1 athletes are completely blind and have to climb with a blindfold, B2 athletes have a visual acuity of up to 2/60 and/or a visual field of less than 5%, B3 in between 2/60 and 6/60 visual acuity and a visual field in between 5 % and 20 %. Blind climbers have a sight guide who announces the holds and moves for the climber.

AU2: Forearm amputee / limb deficiency

AU1 athletes only have one functioning arm, so their climbing style is one arm dynamic moves. Precise footwork and body positioning is needed to compensate for the missing arm.

AU2 has one arm with a forearm amputation or a limb deficiency so that the athlete has one arm and one stump left for climbing. Their reach is limited, the use of finger pockets and pinching is also not possible with the impaired arm.

AL1 is for athletes who use wheelchairs due to no usable function from the waist down or for double hip disarticulation amputees. Their climbing style is purely campusing as they have no use of their legs.

AU2 Athlete Thomas Meier (GER) with leg prosthesis (stretched leg)

AL2 has at least one leg amputation or limb deficiency – no matter the length. The only minimum criteria is that there may be no ankle left. The athletes also may decide if they want to climb with a prosthesis or not. Climbing styles are very different depending on the athlete using a prosthesis or not. There is also a difference if it is a below or above knee amputation / limb deficiency because the additional joint allows specific hooking which might be helpful in steep walls.

RP athletes may have neurological or physiological impairments which can be very different. Some athletes of lower RP classes need a wheelchair while others are limited by other factors (flexibility, coordination, strength). Climbing styles are very different here and in general, in RP categories there are way more “different” types of impairment competing against each other in comparison to other categories.

Routesetting needs to be specific for each category. If you are further interested in this topic, take a look at this page about Paraclimbing routesetting.

How do athletes get classified?

Right before an official IFSC event (World Cups or World Championships), there will be medical examinations for new athletes. During this medical examination, the athletes will present their medical documentation and undergo medical checks in order to determine the sport class.

How can I compete?

Contact your national federation and ask if they have any Paraclimbing structures existing and how you can participate.

Who is not allowed to compete?

  • Athletes with a visual field of more than 20 % and or a visual acuity of more than 6/60.
  • Deaf or hearing impaired persons
  • People with organ transplant
  • Intellectual impaired athletes (for IFSC events! National events may have a different format)

In the current IFSC Rules (2019) there is no precise minimum disability criteria defined for most of the categories.

Merging

In order to have a proper competition, the IFSC has defined minimum criteria on numbers of athletes to start a category. 5 athletes from 3 different countries are needed to run a World Cup category, 6 athletes from 4 different countries to run a category at a World Championship. If less athletes apply for a category, the category is not opened and these athletes would not be allowed to compete.
Because it is better an unfair competition than no competition, the rules give the option to merge certain categories in order to allow more athletes to compete.

Merging schema according to the IFSC rules

There are still inadequacies in the current merging schema: If B3 or RP3 does not have enough athletes, and the categories left of them in the schema exceed the minimum criteria, B3/RP3 are not opened for competition. So the problem is always on the right side of the merging schema because there is no category available to merge them to.

If we look into the statistics, it clearly shows that the concept of merging is needed even with growth over the past years: In theory, we could have 20 categories if all categories exceed the minimum criteria. The World Championship Innsbruck 2018 had 12 categories and sets of medals, the World Championship Briançon 2019 had 14 sets of medals. So there is still room for growth …

Categories which tend to have (too) low numbers of participants:

Men: AU1, AL1

Women: AU1, AU2, AL1, AL2, RP1, RP2, RP3,B1, B2, B3

Registan includes three madrasahs with the rich mosaic decor, carved ceramic and marble decor. From the west the Ulugh Beg Madrasah is located (1417-20; 2 minarets were straightened in 1932, 1965). From the east, in the town-planning technique, which called ‘Kosh’ (that means – in mirror reflexion) with the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, – the Sher-Dor Madrasah (‘The Tigers having’: 1619-1635/36, architect Abdul-Dzhabbar, paintings Mohammed Abbas Samarkandi, main restorations 1926, 1961). And from the north – the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (“Gilded”; 1646/47-1659/60; main restorations 1939, 1970-75).
